People often ask me what kind of journals I like to use in my own art journaling. My favorite art journals have heavy paper (watercolor paper is my favorite) and open flat. I also like to put larger sized paper in between the pages I am on and the pages preceding and after to avoid getting my process on pages I am not working on. I also like to embellish the cover at the start of a new journal so the soft covers work well for me.
My prompt this month is about starting a new journal. Every intern that works in my studio spends 3 months shadowing me, exploring media and supporting people in my open studio. On their first day I give them a journal (just like the one you see above and let them know that this journal is for them, not for me. It is a safe place to explore throughout their time with me. To write down questions for our supervision groups, to reflect, to create...I am so honored to have had some many incredible humans stopping here to intern and taking creative risks on their journey exploring art therapy. I suggest that the cover of there journal be embellished to show who they are at that moment. Not worrying about the future, or the past...but who they are right now at the beginning of the internship. That is how I also look at a new journal. I also embellish the cover with where I am at before beginning the inside work. Here are a few to inspire you, some mine and some others who have given permission to share. It's a new year, why not start a new journal by honoring exactly where you are today. Until next time, be kind to yourself. Life is art... ~bas ![]() Happy New Year!
