![]() Greetings all! I am so excited to announce that I have gotten back on track with the podcast. I have some exciting interviews lined up with individuals who use art and other forms of creativity in their wellness. In episode 12 I sat down with friend and artist Lindsay Grant. Lindsay has been coming to my studio and has been actively participating in our community for around 10 years. In this episode Lindsay and I explore many topics including art making, inspiration and dogs. CLICK HERE TO LISTEN Lindsay has also been a part of EVERY AHLE creative summit and is participating in the Survivor Summit that has just started. Our applications are all in and information sessions with participants are occurring. Art making will begin in May. Watch our AHLE and studio Instagrams, as well as the AHLE and studio Facebook pages for updates! I hope you enjoy this organic conversation! Until next time! Warmest wishes, Beth Ann

This month I am going to give you a list of words. Choose ONE and create a journal entry about it.
Do some stream of consciousness writing. Just let the words flow then shift gears and look for imagery that calls out to you after your writing. Be kind to yourself. Maybe your journal entry is a response to your writing. Maybe the word you choose is your stepping off point. Explore collage materials, use mixed media (collage, paint, drawing materials, stencils, feathers...). Let your process happen, try not to get fixated on the product. Remember to take breaks if you need to. Imagery and the process can bring a lot to the surface. When you have finished step back and be with your piece. You may choose to write again. If you'd like to share your final piece EMAIL a JPEG and I will post it to inspire others. It's an honor to be here on your journey with you. Warm wishes, bas Gratitude Inside Secret Imagine Garden Sleep Beauty Outside Love Friend Fire Water Hope Faith Mystery Faith Choice Mistake Path Heart Soul Forgive Seek Be Balance Grow Passion Today ![]() Have you ever written a haiku? I love this form of poetry because it does NOT have to rhyme and it is short and spontaneous. The format is three lines and they have seventeen syllables in a 5/7/5 syllable count. In traditional Japanese haiku writing topics often focused on nature, but this direct format can be simple, intense, and quite moving. When paired with an image or art expression they can be very descriptive and emotional. For this prompt I want to encourage you to try your hand at a haiku and then put it in a journal entry. Create an entry using mixed media...collage. Not sure what to write about? In my studio we have a box of laminated words people have added and we have used them choosing three to implement into an art journal entry. These can often be fun and not so serious. You could even open up a random book and see what the first or last word on the page is. Check out some examples below. I hope you like this prompt! I would love to see what you came up with! Until next time...bas ![]() We humans encounter many struggles in our lives, many life changing. Our next AH:LE project is going to explore the idea of being a survivor. Details on how to participate in this project coming soon. For now...to get you started thinking about it. What does it mean to you to be a survivor? Please comment below. People often ask me what kind of journals I like to use in my own art journaling. My favorite art journals have heavy paper (watercolor paper is my favorite) and open flat. I also like to put larger sized paper in between the pages I am on and the pages preceding and after to avoid getting my process on pages I am not working on. I also like to embellish the cover at the start of a new journal so the soft covers work well for me.
My prompt this month is about starting a new journal. Every intern that works in my studio spends 3 months shadowing me, exploring media and supporting people in my open studio. On their first day I give them a journal (just like the one you see above and let them know that this journal is for them, not for me. It is a safe place to explore throughout their time with me. To write down questions for our supervision groups, to reflect, to create...I am so honored to have had some many incredible humans stopping here to intern and taking creative risks on their journey exploring art therapy. I suggest that the cover of there journal be embellished to show who they are at that moment. Not worrying about the future, or the past...but who they are right now at the beginning of the internship. That is how I also look at a new journal. I also embellish the cover with where I am at before beginning the inside work. Here are a few to inspire you, some mine and some others who have given permission to share. It's a new year, why not start a new journal by honoring exactly where you are today. Until next time, be kind to yourself. Life is art... ~bas ![]() Happy New Year! Warm wishes, Beth Ann ![]() As we creep up to 2019, we can take time to reflect upon all that has come to pass in 2018. In this month's art journal prompt I encourage you to take a moment and think about the year. In this journal entry find a moment or moments that you want to honor. They may have been difficult or maybe joyful. They are now part of your narrative. Spend some time exploring collage materials that might represent these events. You can use mixed media (collage, paint, drawing materials...). Let your process happen, leave your critical voice outside. Journaling is an ideal place to honor your process. Listen to your body, mind and spirit. During the process take care of your needs. Take breaks if you need to. When you have finished free write in reflection to your piece and process. If you'd like to share your final piece EMAIL ME a JPEG and I will post it to inspire others! Where did the summer go?

Life is process...life is art. :) ![]() Greetings to May and the cusp of spring to summer. This week I grieve the announced closure of Marylhurst University. The university where I received my masters in art therapy and more recently have been teaching adjunct. I am just devastated for the students who's lives are at this unexpected transition. I feel for the other faculty, the families. The sad part is, that the art therapy program has been rated 4th in the nation, but the university's debts have consumed the program for now. Sometimes our life journey faces moments we weren't prepared for. Facing these moments can be a full of strife, conflict, anger...so many feelings the list could go on. What we do next in these moments to take care of ourselves will have a lasting impact. It is vital to honor and validate these feelings in our process, difficult as they may be. This month's journal prompt will explore this further. In this issue I have also included articles on chronic pain, acupuncture and then also information on Jasmine essential oil. Try to accept what each day brings with gratitude and kindness. If you ever have a wellness tip you would like to share, email it to me! I would love to hear what is working for you and share it.
