Testimonial: "I have always enjoyed being creative and have thought about trying art journaling in the past, but could never figure out how to get started. I would get stuck in my head and finally just give up. The journal prompts have helped by giving me a starting point and some structure in exploring my thoughts and feelings on a particular topic, while also providing a lot of room for flexibility and creativity. Since discovering this process, I have been surprised at the growth and change I am seeing in areas of my life where I have felt stuck for a really long time. This is definitely a tool I will continue to use." 37 year old participant

![]() "Nothing is more real than the masks we make to show each other who we are." Christopher Barzak Happy Halloween! This week we are exploring the idea of masks. Throughout our lives we are continually evolving and growing. Think about putting on a mask and assuming the identity of the mask's persona. The idea of wearing a mask is similar to our identity expression and what we show the world. This week let's explore the mask or masks we wear. You decide which facet of your personality you want to work with. Different roles in our lives often bring with them different "masks." Honor which ever mask you want to this week.
Thanks to all who came out on Saturday for my book release, art opening and 10 year celebration. I am the luckiest.
![]() "Great things are done by a series of small things brought together." Vincent Van Gogh We have all caught ourselves asking, "why do I bother?" Maybe we don't say it out loud, but at some point that question has crossed all of our minds. Maybe it was just a small thing like folding wash cloths, or making someone lunch... These small things matter. They matter in our relationships, they matter in our daily routines, they matter in our work place. This week pay attention to the small things. How do they impact you or those around you? Use those moments as an opportunity to practice a moment of mindfulness. The small things can be an opportunity to give yourself or someone else a little extra care or nurturance. This week journal about how the small things impact you and your life. Let this be an opportunity to honor and explore gratitude for things you may take for granted in your rushed and busy life. Explore how the small things that may seem meaningless may contribute to a greater good in your life experience. "It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves."
William Shakespeare Do you believe in fate? Sometimes our lives feel out of our control. Some believe events happen in their lives regardless of their control. I have tried to take difficult moments in life and learn from them. Many events happen in our human lives. Births, celebrations, friendships, romance, break-ups, illness, death...these are just a few of the events in our life cycle. We may not all become parents, but we can have the support and guide others in life. We may not all marry, but we still can find enriching partnerships with others. This week focus your journal entry or entries, on areas you can control in your life. Use word, stream of consciousness writing, paint, collage...it's up to you. Someone shared a wonderful list with me on social media from Ruben Chavez. I am going to include it here: ![]() "Resilience is all about being able to overcome the unexpected. Sustainability is about survival. The goal of resilience is to thrive." Jamais Cascio Resilience, sustainability... powerful words. How can we become more resilient in our lives? How can we make our lives more sustainable and what does that even mean to each of us? When I think of sustainability, I think of a life where the day to day (ups and downs) are embraced and feel consistent and manageable. Where we have what we need and are able to provide for those we care for. We can experience consistencies, but sometimes they are not embraceable or manageable. These may include on-going patterns in our lives that may not be constructive. This week focus your journal entry on areas in your life that you want to personify. Those areas that are embraceable. What feelings come from them? How can you bring more of those opportunities into your life? Use words, imagery... This process could be a tool to explore ways to bring more embraceable experiences into your life thus adding to the sustainability of your balance in all the 8 dimensions of wellness. ![]() "We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty." Maya Angelou (Photo by Cheryl Meyer) Life is full of transition. We navigate through many phases focused on an end-game. Often in the studio I am talking about the importance of the process vs. the product. The product or our end result is important, but it is in the process where we have the opportunity to grow and evolve. This process can be messy and rich with learning experiences. This week we focus on this process and the changes that may come. Explore a specific transition you have already worked through and honor all the steps you took along the way. Use words, imagery...feel free to include personal photos. Journaling is an ideal place to honor your process. Listen to your body, mind and spirit. During the process take care of your needs. Take breaks if you need to. It's an honor to be a part of your journey. Be kind to yourself! ![]() 10 years ago the studio opened it's doors and provided me with a rich and creative community to grow my practice. Book Release: Creative Wellness: Art Journaling with Mindfulness by Beth Ann Short Art Exhibit: Solo work by Beth Ann Short *Original art pieces from Beth Ann's book will be on sale. Saturday, October 22nd from 6-9pm ![]() "Love is really the only thing we can possess, keep with us, and take with us." Elisabeth Kubler-Ross Love comes into our lives in many ways. We find love through family, friends... Love evokes many different feelings, from interpersonal affection to pleasure... Love can also refer to strong attraction or personal attachment. Sometimes love can represent human kindness and compassion. Objects of love might be people, pets, lifestyle choices, experiences...but love isn't the object, it is the feeling an object of love evokes. This week honor the feeling of loving. How ever you want to...how does love show up in your experience of life. Consider your objects of inspiration that evoke your feelings of love. Write, use collage...explore in your art process and don't worry about the product. ![]() Every time you blink you change. Literally. Change is a constant in our lives. Often it is subtle and we barely notice when it happens, other times it can be a turning point in our experience of life. What changes in your life do you remember? Was a change due to you changing a point of view? Have changes occurred accidentally? This week think about changes in your life. Change is inevitable. How we face change is something that we can learn to make more predictable and self-preserving. Embracing change may help in the transition. It is also important to remember to nurture yourself a little in the process. You may also hear your inner critic as you begin to move out of comfort zones that you may have grown out of. This week examine your past patterns of change and coping. Honor change whether it was easy or difficult. Look at your strengths and examine how they have served you and let them be an opportunity to embrace future change. Write, use collage...explore in your art process and don't worry about the product. Journaling is an ideal place to honor your process. Listen to your body, mind and spirit. During the process take care of your needs. Take breaks if you need to. It's an honor to be a part of your journey. Be kind to yourself! |
